Watermelon Basket Refreshing Summer Delight (Printer-Friendly)

A carved watermelon filled with mixed fresh fruits and zesty citrus dressing

# What You'll Need:

→ Fresh Fruits

01 - 1 large seedless watermelon
02 - 2 cups seedless grapes, green or red
03 - 2 cups cantaloupe, balled or diced
04 - 2 cups pineapple, diced
05 - 1 cup strawberries, hulled and halved
06 - 2 kiwis, peeled and sliced

→ Citrus-Honey Dressing

07 - 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
08 - 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
09 - 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves

# How to Make It:

01 - Using a sharp knife, slice 1/4 off the length of the watermelon to create a flat base so it sits steadily.
02 - Mark a handle and basket outline on the watermelon. Carefully cut out the handle and remove the top pieces to expose the flesh.
03 - Scoop out watermelon balls using a melon baller or cut into bite-sized cubes, reserving them in a large bowl.
04 - Pat the inside of the watermelon basket dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
05 - Combine watermelon balls, grapes, cantaloupe, pineapple, strawberries, and kiwis in a mixing bowl.
06 - In a small bowl, whisk together lime juice, honey, and mint. Drizzle the dressing over the fruit and toss to combine.
07 - Gently transfer the mixed fruit into the carved watermelon basket for serving.
08 - Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Garnish with extra mint if desired.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • People will think you spent hours on something that actually takes about 25 minutes tops
  • Its essentially edible art that disappears fast and leaves zero cleanup
02 -
  • The basket will start weeping water as it sits so pat it dry right before serving and maybe drain the bottom once
  • Wait to add the mint dressing until an hour before serving or the fruit breaks down too quickly
03 -
  • Use a dry erase marker to sketch your handle before cutting and wipe off the lines when done
  • A small melon baller creates more uniform pieces than larger ones
