Seasoned ground beef with sautéed vegetables and provolone on buttery toasted rolls.

# What You'll Need:

→ Meat & Cheese

01 - 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
02 - 4 slices provolone cheese

→ Vegetables

03 - 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
04 - 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
05 - 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
06 - 2 cloves garlic, minced

→ Breads & Condiments

07 - 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
08 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
09 - 1 tbsp olive oil

→ Seasonings

10 - 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
11 - 1 tsp salt
12 - ½ tsp black pepper

# How to Make It:

01 - Preheat oven to 375°F.
02 - Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and peppers, cooking until softened and lightly caramelized, about 7–8 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
03 - Push vegetables to one side of the pan. Add ground beef to the empty space, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 6–8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
04 - Mix the beef and vegetables together. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
05 - Slice hoagie rolls in half lengthwise. Spread softened butter on the cut sides. Place on a baking tray and toast in the preheated oven for 3–5 minutes until lightly crisp.
06 - Divide the hot beef mixture evenly among the toasted rolls. Top each sandwich with a slice of provolone cheese. Return to the oven for 2–3 minutes until cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
07 - Serve immediately while hot. Optional accompaniments include pickled peppers or additional condiments of choice.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The ground beef develops these incredible crispy edges that soak up all the seasonings
  • Everything cooks in one pan so cleanup is practically nonexistent
  • Ready in under 40 minutes which beats waiting in line at any sandwich shop
02 -
  • Drain the beef after cooking if there is more than a tablespoon of fat or the rolls will get soggy
  • Buttering the rolls before toasting is not optional, it is what prevents them from falling apart
  • Let the beef mixture cool slightly before piling it onto the rolls so the cheese does not slide off
03 -
  • Cook the beef undisturbed for the first minute so it gets a nice sear before breaking it apart
  • Use freshly ground black pepper if you can, it makes a noticeable difference in the final flavor
